Real Voodoo in New Orleans

With Halloween approaching, people from around the world flock to New Orleans to experience the USA's most haunted city. But one aspect remains misunderstood: Voodoo. Here are a few points revealing the truth behind what Hollywood makes frightening.

  1. Religion. As of 2003, Voodoo became the official religion of Haiti. Therefore, it is a world religion today.

  2. Language. At least in New Orleans, serious practitioners do not speak English during rituals. Only Haitian Creole is spoken during.

  3. Music. Real rituals feature instruments, usually drums, as well as some song and dance.

  4. Kindness. Having met with a High Priestess myself, she explained that Voodoo is an Earth religion, meaning they revere Mother Nature. She even releases cockroaches out of her house alive. How bad can it be if they won't step on a bug?

  5. Tradition. Voodoo is passed down via oral tradition. Nothing is written down, so a book of rituals you may find in a souvenir shop would be 100 percent fake.

The bottom line is if Voodoo looks scary on television, that's just Hollywood trying to make money. Don't forget, just because something is different or unfamiliar doesn't mean it's bad! And of course, to learn more, come on down and take our tours which all include an overview of how real Voodoo works.
